The Challenge

Most existing AR Headsets can not be used in industrial and sports applications. AJProTech partnered with ABOM and VX to create the first Augmented Reality system with a Ballistics rated lens. ABOM was challenging elements of the US ARMY’s Integrated Visual Augmentation system specification (HUD 3.0) as an alternative to Hololens.

The Solution

ABOM AR Goggle design integrates thermal image sensors and 1080p displays offering stereoscopic dual screen output. The device is built with 3D spatial mapping and tracking features using IMU and GPS sensors, as well as military-grade lens. AR Headset employs a 3D depth camera with infrared sensors for low-light conditions.

AJProTech designed electronics hardware, firmware, and helped throughout the engineering for ABOM AR goggles

OUR APPROACH AR HEADSET OUR APPROACH AR HEADSET

Our approach

From inception of this project, we had an ambitious goal - design a function-rich headset in a small form factor in a limited timeframe. Very first iteration of hardware needed to be functional on a sufficient level for system integration tests.

From system architecture to detailed engineering, mechanical and electrical teams worked closely to embed an impressive amount of functionality into a robust goggle design.

Embedded firmware development went in parallel to validate critical solutions prior to order of custom electronics.

PRODUCT DESIGN AR HEADSET

Product design

P3 goggles is a purpose-built Augmented Reality system designed for extreme environmental durability.

Every component engineered by ABOM and VX teams to meet high
impact rating and IP55 for water and dust protection.

Goggles form factor coupled with advanced AR technology may support a variety of Industrial, Safety, and Military applications.

AUGMENTED REALITY DISPLAYS AR HEADSET

Augmented Reality Displays

Headset integrated see-through display modules for mission critical applications.

Two RGB 1080p displays may be used to stream a variety information - thermal imaging, directions, and notifications.

Each modules includes a LCOS microdisplay, a lens, a projector, and dimmable backlight for use in daylight and digital night vision.

HARDWARE DESIGN AR HEADSET HARDWARE DESIGN AR HEADSET

Hardware design

At AJProTech, we have a proven process designing complex electronics hardware. Starting with system architecture and components selection, we reliably produce future-proof electrical designs.

Wearable products always require miniaturization, AR Headset packed with cameras, sensors, displays is no exception. Mechanical design team provided tight space to fit a 6 interconnected PCBs - and we delivered on that.

Headset has a USB C connector with a number of high speed interfaces like USB3.1, MIPI Display. Rigid and rigid-flex PCBA designs hold tight control of impedance and propagation time. 6-layer PCBs with smallest 0201 components made it possible.

THERMAL IMAGING SENSORS AR HEADSET THERMAL IMAGING SENSORS AR HEADSET

Thermal imaging Sensors

Integrated Advanced Thermal Image Sensors bring real-time thermal video feed to the heads-up displays.

That allows for hands-free real-time thermal imaging and Thermal Night Vision.

3D Depth Camera

Headset is equipped with 3D Depth camera bringing 1080p RGB and Depth image to heads-up displays.

Intel RealSense camera with Active Infrared Light provides critical depth perception in indoor and outdoor applications especially in low light.

Thermal sensors paired with 3D Depth Infrared Camera provide a perfect combination for a night vision .

Active anti-fog glass AR HEADSET

Active anti-fog glass

The ABOM goggles are famous for their patented active anti-fog technology.

P3 Goggles incorporates lens with transparent electrically heated film layer between outer two layers for clear, fog-free vision.

Firmware design AR HEADSET

Firmware design

Purpose-built products often require flexible User Interface and rapidly changing specs. Before locking down on final hardware, we validated all solutions on demo boards and selected most scalable software architecture.

We designed embedded firmware in a way that video from 3D and Thermal cameras stream to control unit. Headset connects through a USB C (USB 3.1) connection as a Plug Play device.

External Linux / Windows controller running top-level software drives video stream to heads-up displays - either camera image, directions, or another information.

Embedded firmware controls display brightness, external IR and LED flashlights, and receives data from a variety of positioning sensors.

Prototyping AR HEADSET Prototyping AR HEADSET

Prototyping

Headset incorporates a total of 6 custom electronics boards of various size and functionality. Rapid PCBA fabrication and assembly was used to deliver functional electronics on time.

Remarkably, first iteration of PCBs was functional on sufficient level for system integration tests.

VX drove industrial design, integration of display modules, and overall integration to present complete functional units.

Pilot validation AR HEADSET

Pilot validation

Sufficient number of pilot units were produced for demonstrations and market validation.

ABOM was challenging Hololens to supply AR Headsets to U.S. Army and other Industrial applications.

Software for control unit and User Interface are to be developed in collaboration with end users.

Impact

ABOM introduced first fully integrated Augmented Reality (AR) goggle designed to meet Military standards and extreme use-case performance.
