AJProTech’s role in building the smartwatch for hunters
The RECKON is a GPS smartwatch built for hunters and backcountry users who need navigation to work without phone signal, with up to 38 days of battery life. Bridger came to AJProTech as its hardware engineering partner, and AJProTech carried the watch through feasibility, industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, firmware, and prototyping. The Founder Series, the watch’s first production run, was capped at 500 serialized units according to Bridger’s website. Presale opened in December 2025, and the run is now listed as sold out on bridgerwatch.com.
How AJProTech engineered the smartwatch for hunters
There was no ready-made mapping watch on the market Bridger could license or white-label, and existing suppliers with the right capability had no interest in a partnership. Building their own was the only option, so Bridger came to AJProTech to design every layer of the RECKON, mechanical, electrical, and firmware, from scratch.
Space was the constraint that shaped everything else. A GNSS receiver accurate enough for broken, timbered country, a full sensor array, a battery that lasts weeks, and a screen readable in direct sun all compete for the same limited volume on a wrist. Fitting all of it into a case slim enough for daily wear was the central engineering challenge AJProTech’s electrical team faced. Development started with a validation board carrying every function in an accessible layout, so the electronics could be tested and debugged before anyone tried to shrink them down.
Choosing the case material
We selected Grade 5 titanium paired with fiber reinforced polymer for the Bridger’s case, with a sapphire crystal lens protecting the screen from scratches and impact. This combination is lighter than steel and harder than most alloys, while holding up to corrosion in the field. The rectangular geometry that makes the screen well suited to maps also concentrates stress at the corners more than the round case option AJProTech evaluated earlier. As a result, drop protection was built into the internal chassis rather than a thicker outer shell.
Firmware that extends battery life
The firmware, developed by the AJProTech team, plays as large a role in the Bridger’s performance as its hardware. The watch reads motion data to determine when a GPS fix is actually needed. When movement is steady and predictable, the GPS module powers down and position keeps updating from the accelerometer alone. This single decision accounts for a significant share of the Bridger’s battery life gain over a watch that leaves GPS running continuously.
The controls follow the same field-first thinking: dedicated buttons for maps, weather, compass, and waypoints sit alongside the touchscreen, so the watch stays usable with gloves on and no need to dig through menus.
What the Bridger project says about how AJProTech works
Field use during the Founder Series put the engineering AJProTech delivered in front of real hunters, in real terrain, ahead of Bridger’s decision to scale production. That is the kind of real-world proof AJProTech aims for before any client commits to mass production.
The Founder Series will never be made again, but that does not make the RECKON a limited-edition product. Bridger is now selling the standard RECKON in ongoing production, built on the platform AJProTech engineered and the Founder Series validated in the field.
